Next Weekend is a special event at Mr. Ed’s Bar & Grille. The only catch is that it is at the Port Clinton location! So if you are up on the island, you can pop over on the Jet Express to hear the Dueling Pianos and pop back on the last ferry to the island to catch some great late night Put-In-Bay bands as well!
Dueling Pianos new time is from 6-9pm, this coming Sunday August 9! You don’t want to miss this show. Outside this weekend, Mr. Ed’s will be having acoustic shows from 2-6pm every Sunday in August. Stop in and enjoy some great food, drink specials, and entertainment!
The 3 Whiskey 2 Pilots Association (the island’s pilots association) is so pleased to be coordinating with their friends in the PutinBay Car Parades for the upcoming Sunday’s combined Fly-in/Antique Car Event from 11am – 4pm. As we understand it, the car parade will depart from the airport (instead of the Twine Shanty) and return after the parade. And if you didn’t hear, the event includes a PIG ROAST!!!
Please feel free to come as early as 11:30am, when we will open the parking lot gates for parade cars, to enjoy some great food (get it before your neighbor eats it all) and camaraderie prior to the parade! Looking forward to a fun day of cool cars and airplanes! Sunday, August 9th, 2015.
What a beautiful day for a race!!! The 3rd Annual Perry’s Victory Triathlon & Family Races was moved due to weather from Sunday, June 28, 2015 to today Sunday, July 19, 2015 at Put-in-Bay, Ohio (South Bass Island). Perry’s Victory Triathlon was a great opportunity to get in shape for the summer and everyone this morning enjoyed a day on the beautiful island of Put-in-Bay!
The route had been designed to take runners on a scenic tour of the historic island of Put-in-Bay. The hub of the race is being held on the lawn of the Peace Garden at Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial. This was a great event for first time du/triathletes as well as seasoned veterans. The event offered a Sprint Triathlon, Sprint Duathlon, Kids & Family FUN Run and a 5k Run/Walk.
One tiny village on a small island in the north end of Ottawa County near the Canadian border continues to get quite a lot of attention, especially as the tourism season ramps up.
Put-in-Bay has found its way into yet another list of top vacation destinations. Most recently, this humble little community on South Bass Island was named one of “The 50 Coolest Small Towns in America” by Esquire magazine. (http://www.esquire.com/lifestyle/g2227/best-small-towns-america/?slide=35)
“This island on Lake Erie got its name from 18th century schooners that would ‘put in’ on the bay to wait out bad weather,” the article reads.
It could be that blend of historical significance, when combined with its waterfront party atmosphere, attracts the nearly quarter of a million yearly visitors to the tiny town with a population of just 138.
Of course, this is far from the first time Put-in-Bay is getting recognition as a popular summer destination, and the accolades seem to be piling up. Back in April, it made Smithsonian magazine’s list of the “20 Best Small Towns to Visit in 2015.”
PlanetWare, a travel and adventure website, ranked Put-in-Bay as the eighth best place to visit in all of Ohio. Last year, Flight Network named it one of America’s four best small towns to visit. And the year before that, it was one of the 15 finalists for Budget Travel’s coolest small towns of 2013.
The National Park Service plans on keeping a full-time superintendent and staff at a Lake Erie island landmark monument.
Ohio Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur says the Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial on South Bass Island will remain a separate unit of the park system.
The park service had been looking at combining the staff overseeing the Perry’s monument site and the River Raisin National Battlefield Park in Monroe, Mich.
The 350-foot tall monument in Ohio honors a key victory in the War of 1812; while River Raisin National Battlefield Park recalls the Battles of the River Raisin that were also a milestone point in that war.
Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry captured a British fleet near the island during the battle that’s remembered for his command: “Don’t Give Up the Ship.”
Brimming with history, Midwest charm and beautiful landscapes, Ohio is the place to be for quintessential American small towns. From arty Yellow Springs – one of the nation’s coolest small towns – to the picturesque island community of Put-in-Bay, The Culture Trip rounds up some of the prettiest places in the Buckeye State.
Located on tiny South Bass Island around five miles from the Ohio mainland, Put-in-Bay is a picturesque island town and popular summer tourist destination when thousands flock to enjoy the town’s quaint restaurants, lively pubs and recreational activities like walleye and perch fishing – no wonder Put-in-Bay is often nicknamed the “Key West of the North”. History buffs will delight in its historic homes and pivotal role in the War of 1812: Perry’s Victory and International Peace Monument – a 352 foot high Doric column and one of the USA’s tallest monuments – towers over Put-in-Bay’s harbor and commemorates Oliver Hazard Perry’s victory over British forces in the waters off the island.

This Spring has seen the usual influx of fisherman from across the Midwest and northwest. Trucks and trailers with license plates from Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and even the state up north are on the island catching their limit of Walleye. There is still time to book a house for your fisherman group and enjoy the waters of Lake Erie.

Townspeople commemorate the events of 1812 every September with Perry’s Victory Heritage Fest, featuring music, art and a recreation of an 1812 military encampment. This summer also marks the start of five years of visits from the U.S. brig Niagara, a historic replica of one of Perry’s ships that will offer tours, sailing trips and the chance to learn old-fashioned seamanship skills. Perry’s Cave (where the commander found drinking water for his men) also offers historic tours, while Crystal Cave across the street features the world’s largest geode, sparkling with pale blue celestine crystals
