The Ice Rescue at Catawba Island State Park

Ice Rescue at Catawba Island State Park

When the summer season of Put-in-Bay comes to an end and the lake begins to freeze, ice fishermen are ready to go.  For many years, the ice fishermen have enjoyed the frozen winter wonderland while in their ice shanties on the hunt for fresh bass, perch and walleye.

Standing on a frozen lake is never going to be completely safe.  On March 9th, 2019 roughly 100 ice fishermen found themselves stranded as a large chunk of ice separated itself form the mainland.  The US Coast Guard, Put-in-Bay Volunteer Fire Department, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, Catawba Island Volunteer Fire Department and Police, and North Central EMS all acted as first responders to the emergency. read more

Put-in-Bay Ohio Ice Fishing Looking Promising!

Old Man Winter has sent an arctic blast across the region, making Put-in-Bay Ohio Ice Fishing a real possibility.  With the plummeting temperatures comes an islander’s Winter wish, ice!  These early below average temps could lead to one of the best ice fishing seasons in recent memory.

Weather Contributes to Put-in-Bay Ohio Ice Fishing

Currently, a Polar Vortex has swept across the region.  According to an article on Live Science, a polar vortex is part of a low-pressure system.  Moreover, as winds blow in towards the center of the system where the lower pressure is located a phenomenon occurs.  This is known as the Coriolis Effect.  In the Northern Hemisphere the storms spin counterclockwise and in the Southern they spin clockwise.  The Earth’s spin causes this effect.  During the Winter months, the North Pole tilts away from the Sun.  Due to the perpetual darkness, the temperature gradients vary. Consequently, these gradients power wind, which in turn leads to a low pressure system swirling around the pole.  This vortex resides within the stratosphere.  However, when it dips into the troposhere, we see the frigid air affect our weather. read more

Stone Laboratory In The News

fish hatchery

Stone Laboratory at Put-in-Bay is the oldest freshwater biological field station in the United States (1929).

Stone Labs is both a campus for Ohio State University and site for Ohio Sea Grant studies. It has been central to much Great Lakes research. Stone Lab is scenic with a natural arch, “Eye of the Needle,” and Perry’s Lookout from the Battle of Lake Erie. That research assumed more than regular importance when Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) rocketed into international news recently. HAB toxins were shutting off drinking water to 400,000 residents in the Toledo area back in 2014. read more

Making Your Way to Put in Bay

put in Bay Overhead View

If you start your Lake Erie vacation in Sandusky, you will be very close to some excellent dining, gardens, and lakefront scenery. Fine dining (not really child appropriate) includes J Bistro, Crush Winebar, and Zinc Brasserie. Small City Taphouse (Asian fusion and craft beers), Water Street Bar & Grill (good pub food, fine for families before 8pm), and Dockside Café (outside dining only, simple foods from a service window) are all family appropriate. Also great in downtown Sandusky is the New Sandusky Fish Co, which is right next to Shoreline Park (east of where you’re staying). Also carryout/outside dining only, but the best Lake Erie fish you will ever taste. Port Sandusky family restaurant is new-ish, and I’ve not yet tried it but have heard good things. The Lunch Box is a well established place for breakfast and lunch. Mr. Smith’s Coffee is a good downtown place for breakfast and coffee in the AM. I’ve also never been to Hot Dog Tony’s because I don’t like hot dogs, but is very convenient to where you’ll be staying. read more
