Many people, when they think of Put-in-Bay, think of the nightlife. The bars and pubs that, to be fair, are some of the best in the Midwest. But what a lot of people don’t realize is that during the week, Put-in-Bay is flooded with vacationers of all ages, coming to enjoy all of the family activities that Put-in-Bay has to offer. Ohio State Stone Labs

Ohio State Stone Labs on Put-In-Bay is a fresh water research facility.  For over 100 years they have been conducting testing and observations.  Their efforts have contributed to the health of the lake.  Stone Labs is a great asset.

History of Ohio State Stone Labs

This location first became a freshwater field station in 1895.  Then, in 1925 The Ohio State University began to run the facility.  In 1864 construction was began by Civil War financier Jay Cooke. Additionally, he built what became known as Cooke Castle.  Both of these building reside on Gibraltar Island.  This small island is located north of the downtown Put-In-Bay harbor.  In addition to research, Stone Lab is integral in outreach programs.  Thousands of students have passed through.  Overall, they gained love for the sciences.  Also, Ohio State hosts college level courses for students.  This gives those with relevant majors a chance for practical experience.  Also, they can contribute to research. read more

Perry’s Cave

Perrys Cave is the centerpiece of a great Put-In-Bay Attraction.  Here, guests can take tours of the cave.  Also, visitors can learn about its formation, history and more.

Perrys Cave Location

The cave is located in the Perrys Cave and Family Fun Center.  This is located on Catawba Avenue, between Joe’s Bar and The Goat Restaurant.  Additionally, Heineman Winery and Crystal Cave are across the street.  Furthermore, the fun center has a great amount of activities.  Here, the Butterfly House, War of 1812 Mini Golf and Gem Stone Mining are located.

About Perrys Cave

The cave lies about 52 feet below the surface of Put-In-Bay.  Discovery is accredited to Oliver Hazard Perry.  He is believed to have found it in 1813.  More importantly, he used water from the cave for his men.  Perry is responsible for defeating the British in the Battle of Lake Erie.  The cave is 165 feet wide by 208 feet long.  Furthermore, the heavily encrusted calcium carbonite has formed interesting formations.  These include stalagmites, stalactites and cave pearls on the walls.  Inside, the temperature remains at 50 degrees year round.  Also, the lake inside is notable.  It rises and falls with the levels of Lake Erie. So, some speculate that it may connect to the lake underground. read more

Perrys Victory Monument

Perrys Victory is the most striking Monument on Put-In-Bay.  This large column rises above the skyline.  The monument is a nod to Oliver Hazard Perry’s victory in the War of 1812.  Additionally, it’s a reminder of peace between the US, Canada and Great Britain.

The Put-In-Bay Raceway has the racing action to get your blood pumping.  Racers can challenge their friends to some laps around the track.  So, start your engines for this exhilarating time!

The raceway is located in downtown Put-In-Bay near the Boathouse Bar and Grill.  Also, the Jet Express and Perrys Monument are just a few steps away. Downtown Put-In-Bay is home to most of the attractions, dining and shopping on the island.  So, the Put-In-Bay Raceway can be incorporated into a day trip easily.

The cars on this specially designed track go up to 50 MPH.  So these cars travel faster than any vehicle on Put-In-Bay.  The highest speed limit for any road on the island is 35!  Still, the speed is safe here as it is contained within the track.  Racers can squeal in excitement as their cars whizz past. read more

Adventure Bay Amusement Park has options for the whole family.  From a large arcade to a go cart track, there is fun around every corner.  Bring the family for a memorable time.

This family fun center is located just outside the downtown Put-In-Bay area on Main St.  Nearby, the Put-In-Bay Post Office and Island Hardware are the closest neighbors.  Also, the Put-In-Bay Resort and Conference Center is a short stroll away.

Tour Train

The Put-in-Bay Tour Train is an outstanding way to see and learn about the island.  Enjoy the island breezes while embarking on a one hour guided tour.  The open air trolley is easily visible with its yellow color scheme.

Tickets are available at the Downtown Bus terminal.  This is located at the corner of Delaware and Toledo Avenues.  Then, passengers board on an open air trolley driven by a Jeep.  The tour provides riders with a wealth of information about the history of Put-in-Bay.  Also, it points out various points of interest along the way.  Another great aspect of the scheduled stops on the journey.  During the journey, the tour train makes stops at Perry’s Cave and Family Fun Center, Heineman’s Winery, Perry’s Monument and the Lake Erie Island Nature and Wildlife Area. read more
