The Park Hotel has been a fixture on the downtown Put-in-Bay scene for over 150 years.  Originally, the hotel opened as the Deutches Hotel in the 1870s.  A striking feature of the new lodging choice was beds with springs, instead of beds stuffed with hay.  The first owner is believed to be George Schmidt.  A newspaper article from this era mentions him as owner.  Also, the Roundhouse Bar construction was in Toledo and shipped to Put-in-Bay. read more

The Colonial: 30 Years Later

The building was nothing short of spectacular and iconic in downtown Put-In-Bay; now we look back on The Colonial 30 years later.  Generations of islanders and tourist spent time here, enjoying the dancing, bowling and more.  Then, on that tragic day in May 1988, the building quickly engulfed in flames.  Let’s take a trip down memory lane.  Find an easy chair, pour a beverage and follow the story of the beloved Colonial, a favorite Put-In-Bay Attraction of yesteryear.

The land where the Colonial resided has a tumultuous history.  First, a home known as the “White House” was on the property.  Here, guests could stay on occasion, making it one of Put-In-Bay’s first boarding houses.  Then, in 1861 ownership changed hands to Joseph W Gray, the editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Vintage Sports Car Racers Return to Put-in-Bay – AUGUST 28-31, 2016!

Put-in-Bay, Ohio — The Put-in-Bay Road Races Reunion for the eighth straight year will again wake up the residents of sleepy South Bass Island (off Ohio’s North Coast near Sandusky, OH) with the sights, sounds and smells of vintage sports cars roaring through its quaint streets and around its airport, much the same as it was on the island for one weekend a year back in the 1950s and early ‘60s. This year’s event takes place from Monday, August 29 to Wednesday, August 31.

Unlike most vintage racing events, the Put-in-Bay Road Races Reunion (PIBRRR) welcomes owner-drivers of qualified racing and non-racing vintage sports cars of all types to be part of the show and participate in various events and activities. Info: This years July 4th includes a freedom concert presented by Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial by Jamison Charles and the Flying J’s starting around 7:30 on the lower plaza of the Monument. There will also be General George Patton’s Schooner “When and If” that will be doing day sails from the public docks. A grand fireworks program will also be presented at dark, on the Fourth of July, by the Put-in-Bay Business Owners & Friends of the Bay.  The aerial display will be shot off a barge in the downtown harbor and is best viewed anywhere along the downtown waterfront and from Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial grounds. read more

2015 Put-in-Bay Historical Weekend was Again a Success!

This past weekend featured some of the best weather of the summer with warm sunny days and cool comfortable evenings. Historical buffs and revelers alike descended upon the island and partook of the many different historical celebrations throughout the three-day event. Some of the more memorable events:

9/11 Sunset Tribute on Friday night at Perry’s Victory & International Peace Monument.

Perry’s Victory Heritage Festival on Perry’s Monument lawn. The 202nd Anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie took place this weekend. Art, history, and an 1812 military encampment plus about 1,200 Boy Scouts camped on the memorial east lawn. The annual Grande Parade was held at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday and had a record crowd. read more

Put-in-Bay Fall Ball 2015 – October 2-3

For 17 years, this annual fall festival called the Put-in-Bay Fall Ball (http://www.putinbayfallball.com) has been taking place at the Island Club Homes on South Bass Island. It started out as a gathering of friends with a few beers, guitars, and bonfires and has grown into an all-out party with well over 1700 people in attendance. The adult beverages have grown up to a complete keg truck. The music has grown up to multiple bands and island musicians. And thousands of hamburgers, hot dogs, and bratwurst have been added to feed the hungry masses. This two-day customer appreciation party is open to all guests who are staying at The Island Club, The Commodore Resort, The Put-in-Bay Condos, Victory Station Hotel, and the Blue Harbour Hotel.
