This & That
We keep hearing the rumor Sheriff Deputy Gary Alred and his K-9 Officer Storm are to be reassigned to Middle Bass Island this season. What’s that all about? There must be a serious problem on Middle Bass we all don’t know about.
Griffing Flying Service is continuing its grocery pickup service in the spring and summer seasons. Orders must be placed by 6 p.m. on Tuesdays to be delivered the following day on Wednesday.
Congratulations to Madeline Pugh who has accepted the position of Swim Director and Lead Instructor for PIB Community Swim Sail Program.

It’s hard to believe, but the Swim/Sail Program on the island is celebrating 75 years this year.
We read recently that the Reel Bar was serving Grouper Cornucopia and the Boathouse was serving New Orleans Muffaletta. How times have changed! Back in the day, you would never have found grouper or muffaletta on any island menu. This just shows how sophisticated we’ve become.
“Is anything going in at the Crescent property?” is another question going around the island. There’s work going on there, but word on the street is that the project originally planned for the property has been downscaled.
Stone Lab on Gibraltar Island is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
Dave Schafer, the owner of Ashley’s Island House, was at Progressive Field in Cleveland for the opening baseball game of the Cleveland Guardians 2025 season. It was his 53rd year in a row.
Noddi’s Java, the coffee shop at the Picnic Basket, is expanding and opening a second shop on the deck at Miller Boat Line’s Lime Kiln Dock.
Speaking of coffee, two more cafes are expected to be opening on the island in May. Sous Le Chévre (Under the Goat) is replacing the Chocolate Cafe on Catawba Ave. and the Put-in-Bay Winery will soon be serving up breakfast, lunch and coffee at the new Doller Cafe.
There’s a new country song from Jesko White about the island called “Highway to Put-in-Bay.” Check it out on YouTube. We think you’ll be surprised, plus we’re wondering which entertainer will be performing it this season.
If you’ve never been to one of the Memorial Services that is held at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club on Memorial Day weekend, you’re missing an island tradition. You can attend this month on Sunday, May 25th, at noon on the waterfront at the yacht club. Current and past members who the club has lost in the last 12 months are remembered with a red rose placed in the Bay from the Pavilion.
The library is looking for a part-time clerk to replace Marcia Ashley who is officially retiring. Marcia will be truly missed.
If you live on Put-in-Bay, count yourself lucky. The passenger fare on the Kelleys Island ferry is $12. The good news is there is a $2 discount for seniors.
