This & That

With the Spring play right around the corner, Annie Parker reminded us of Lona Blocker’s rendition of Agatha Christie’s TEN LITTLE INDIANS performed years ago. Lona rented cottages down by the Bathing Beach several decades ago. Apparently 10 tuxedoes had to be found along with ten actors to wear them? Annie says her husband, Joe Parker, and Eddie Cooper, the owner of Cooper’s Restaurant were among the group. Annie also told us that “Old Gazettes are my bedtime stories.”
Glenn Cooper is celebrating working 50 years for Miller Boat Line this year.
A snowy owl was spotted on Starve Island this winter. These birds migrate from the Arctic to northern Ohio for the winter and go no further south.
“Dorm Dad” Frank is coming back to PIB to take on a management position with the Put-in-Bay Resort and Conference Center.
The official start of spring is less than a month away, but Lake Erie is already starting to thaw. This thaw comes after the ice coverage reached its peak in mid-February. As of Feb. 24th, Lake Erie is 86% to 87% frozen over, according to the National Weather Service office in Cleveland which handles the Erie forecast. Earlier in February, Lake Erie was 95% frozen over. For February, Lake Erie is above the historical average for ice coverage recorded at above 60%.
A team from Stone Laboratory went out on the ice one day last month to collect a water sample as a part of the Great Lakes-wide coordinated effort termed the “winter grab.” Dozens of researchers from around the Great Lakes collected samples.
We’re sad to see WPIB Radio shut down. Owner Greg Peiffer tells us it was time to retire. WPIB Radio streamed music from popular entertainers, streamed PIB High School basketball games, plus had shows that featured Mad Dog and other island entertainers, plus at one time had Rudy Cooks and Christie Ontko Duffy discussing island topics, and much more. Greg says all the programming was saved to the Cloud, and although broadcast streaming has ceased, the WPIB Radio Facebook page is still active.
