This & That

Be sure to mark Thursday, July 24th on all your calendars to remind yourself to wish Jan Anteau from Sybil Blvd. a happy 70th birthday if you see her.

Speaking of birthdays, Past PIBYC Commodore Ron Sharkey will be turning 80 on Wednesday, July 23rd.

We’d like to know which Lake Erie Island is the most snake infested.

The Lime Kiln freight warehouse on PIB will be closed at 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Also a reminder that there is no freight pick up after 9 a.m. on Sunday’s due to vehicle traffic. Thank you!

We hear the Family Advocacy Center’s delivering of summer meals for island kids is going quite well. Twenty-six households with 66 kids are in the program. A big shout out goes to the volunteers from Mother of Sorrows and St. Paul’s who are delivering the meals, and to the Jet Express for transporting all the meals to the island from Port Clinton.

When Wednesdays come along and you’re looking for something to do, mozy on down to the PIB Town Hall for Bingo. Play begins at 8 p.m., so get there early for your cards and a good seat. Check out the new table lights while you are there.

Due to recent storm damage, the 30’ x 40’ American flag at the Put-in-Bay Winery was torn. While they waited for a proper replacement, they raised their huge Pirate flag in celebration of the upcoming Pirate Festival. Thank you for your patience. We remain proud Americans and enthusiastic Pirates!

Wait until you see the men of Put-in-Bay calendar the EMS put out for a fundraiser. It’s not your grandmother’s Men of Put-in-Bay calendar!

If you’re into beer can hats, check out the selection at the Bell Buoy gift shop on Hartford Ave. and pick one up.

We got to thinking about Henry Ford the other day. He probably never dreamed that rides in a Ford Trimotor would be offered from time to time at Put-in-Bay nearly 100 years after the first one was built…. or that his revolutionary-at-the-time Model-Ts and Model-As would be seen parading around the island each Sunday in season in the year 2025. The third and fourth Ford connections to the island are the cut off bow of his flag ship, the Benson Ford, perched on Put-in-Bay’s West Shore, and the classic Benson Ford bow-shaped glass bottles for the vodka sold at Noble Cut Distillery here at Put-in-Bay.

Wendy Chambers from the Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce is scheduled to be the guest speaker at the Put-in-Bay Property Owners Association on Saturday, July 19th, at the PIB Senior Center. She will be discussing how Put-in-Bay will be celebrating America’s 250th birthday next year.

We hear Canadian scientists are concerned that U.S. federal job and budget cuts will harm the Great Lakes when it comes to monitoring toxic algae and invasive species, and are warning that they will have “catastrophic” effects on the Great Lakes.
