This & That

We learn new things everyday about the people and things going on around the islands. One of the strangest things we learned last month is that one of the studies going on at Stone Lab involves force feeding fish with plastic to study what happens.

The World’s Largest Rubber Duck that will be on the island out by the airport on August 1st, 2nd and 3rd is taller than a five-story building.

Chiggers seem to be especially bad this year. One islander highly recommends using a bit of that old Covid-favorite, hand sanitizer on them for a bit of relief.

Island Entertainer Ray Fogg is in the final stages of completing a new live album recorded at Reel Bar. Details to follow soon.

Put-in-Bay was recently named Ohio’s Most Fascinating Small Town on one of those websites on the internet.

The Put-in-Bay definition of obscenity: Property taxes going up 90% from 2021 to 2025 because you build a garage.

The Goat will be open 7 nights a week for dinner in October! Plan accordingly!

We don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble, but those patriotic firework displays we enjoy like the island’s 4th of July one may not be so patriotic afterall. It turns out most of the fireworks used in the US, are manufactured in China. Specifically, around 99% of consumer fireworks and about 70% of professional display fireworks sold in the US originate from China.

Happy 35th anniversary to the Middle Bass Island Yacht Club, or MBIYC for short.

Something you don’t normally get to see is a ruby-throated hummingbird nest. Sue Thwaite found one at her home this summer.

One of the island restaurants inspected by the Ottawa County Health Department’s Sanitation Division had a single violation in June…..It was the consumer advisory at the bottom of their menu. It didn’t have an asterisk included.

Tired of the heat? Head north to Lake Superior to enjoy a cool swim where a lake water temperature of 39° was reported by a buoy off of Isle Royale National Park. Lake Superior is the only Great Lake to record colder than average water temperatures in mid-July.

Kristin Stanford has been finalizing displays for newly remodeled historic fish hatchery (aka Aquatic Visitors Center) and is in search of anyone who is willing to donate any old antique fishing equipment, tackle or even photos that celebrate the rich history of fishing on the islands. Please contact her if you think you might have something to donate for the display.

Island Artists can set up on The Lawn at Sweet Siblings on Toledo Ave. on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Stop by for Painter Sarah’s canvases, Holly’s seaglass and John’s woodworking, plus others. While you shop, maybe a little bowl of ice cream? The vendor fees benefit the Put-in-Bay Arts Council.

A big thank you goes out to Robbie Morrow and his crew from Crew’s Nest who helped lay fresh sod at Mother of Sorrow’s new entrance patio.

Congrats to Nikolai Blumensaadt, PIBHS Class of 2008, for competing in and winning the Rattlesnake Island Club’s 2025 golf championship recently.
